Society of Actuaries Research Institute Recognizes Winners of the 2024 Student Research Case Study Challenge

May 3, 2024, Chicago, IL – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute has named the winners of its 2024 Student Research Case Study Challenge. This annual global competition enables university actuarial students to showcase their actuarial skills in team competitions. The team StatSmart Solutions from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia, won first place. Second place went to Luminous Lake Lifeguards also from UNSW, and third place went to the team Mew Consulting from Salisbury University in Maryland.

Every year teams of two to five actuarial students research a case study, conduct actuarial analysis, formulate solutions and present recommendations in a report. This year the teams designed a wellness program to be bundled with a fictional longer-term life insurance product and delivered a high-level report, informed by their research and analysis. The SOA Research Institute received 57 submissions from 27 universities, spanning 12 countries and six continents.

The winning teams’ universities receive grants: USD 5,000 for first place; USD 3,000 for second place; and USD 2,000 for third. Additionally, students from these three winning teams each receive USD 500.

The annual case study challenge provides actuarial students the opportunity to highlight their knowledge and math skills, while also applying their creativity, collaboration and presentation abilities. The case study challenge is part of the SOA Research Institute’s mission to partner with universities in developing future actuaries.
